That was inspired. That was truly inspired.

The library. Of course, the library. Where else would I go to research Mhairi Tartan-Girl? And who else would I go with, if not a genealogist? The library is exactly where I’m heading now, even though I find myself taking a ridiculously circuitous route to get there, via Greyfriars of all places.

Of course, the fact that Lexie’s a stunner isn’t even part of the equation — but honestly, I can’t stop smiling to myself when I think of how I looked outside and there she was with Isla and Liza and Isabel, of all people.

They said that Schubert had sort of barrelled off her and she’d come up the side street after him — but how cool that she happened to be passing at that particular time, at that particular moment . . .

‘Aye, it’s alreet for some, being on time for suchlike.’ The round, northerly tones assault my eardrums as I jump and Mhairi appears from behind a damn mausoleum again. I seriously do not know why I chose to walk past Greyfriars today . . .

Mhairi suddenly zooms over to the gates and peers at me angrily through the bars. ‘Where’s the wee ane? Yon felkyo. She needs to get me out of—’ she pokes her finger at nothing in particular, at everything around her ‘—here.’

Her voice is almost musical, and the “r” rolls beautifully as Mhairi says the word “here”, but I haven’t got time to compliment her on her accent or ask her what the hell “felkyo” means. Instead, I turn on her and stare at her furious little face. It strikes me that she’d be really pretty if she wasn’t screwing her face up like she was chewing a wasp. ‘Mhairi. What’s your surname?’

She’s taken aback slightly and zooms backwards then forwards again. ‘My surname?’

‘Yes. Your last name.’

‘I ken whit a surname is!’ She glares at me. ‘I just dinnae ken why ye need it.’

‘So we can help you.’ I can’t help it. I hiss, equally angrily back at her, then look around me. I’m going to look crazy if anyone is following me. ‘I’m coming in,’ I tell her. ‘Wait there.’

‘Oho! No’ like I can do much else, is it?’ she mutters and rattles the gates a bit. I ignore her and slip into the cemetery. ‘And I’m not telling you my name.’ She scuttles after me and I ignore her. I’m too used to Nessa to be bothered by her pettiness.

I walk nonchalantly towards James Craig, then take a slight diversion towards Henry Siddons, the actor. I’m sure he knew a bit about keeping his cool in stressful situations and, as he wrote a play about a ghost, he’s a kindred spirit, pardon the pun, and won’t stand any extra nonsense from this girl.

Mhairi darts to and fro, grumbling at intervals as she powers through — yes through — the big, upright tombstones, keeping pace with me. She’s still not spilling her name, though.

‘Surname, Mhairi, please,’ I say, putting on a bored voice and leaning against Henry’s tomb.
